Problem feedback

Hi everybody,

I'm french so I'm sorry for my future mistakes that i will write in this post.:P

I tried to search in the forum a topic like this but I didn't find one).

My problem(i've got so many others:D ):

When I open Kristal on my PC (windows XP Pro), there is automatically a little feedback(larsen). That is boring because the feedback is always there when i record a song. I can't erase this feeback. :(

Please, could you help me?:)

I give you a link that I try to put in line (listen the feeback in the beggining of the song):

Vincenth,

Try looking at the input settings in preferences. Sounds like something is feeding into Kristal.

Cheers,

Hi Mark,

i tried what you teach to me in your last post.;)

I tried two possibilities.

-First:

-I go in preferences.

-I click on "Audio set up"

-I click on "Asio Control Panel"

-I try to put the Buffer on "More compatible" but when i click on " Apply" or "Ok", and the computeur give me a message like this " Error#0x80070005 ".
I can't change this.

Second:

-I go in "preferences"

-I go in "Audio setup"

-I click "fast track M-audio"

-I go in "Asio inputs"

-I got two items "1 line in 1 fast track" and "2 line in 2 fast track"

-I try to deslect one and other and none changes appaear. there is some feedback. But at the moment I click on "aplly" feedback disepears for 1/2 seconds and appears back in my ears.

Sorry for my english. It's not easy to describe this scene.

Have you more device to give to me, please.;)

Hi, Vincentb...

If you could post a clip of just the feedback that you hear it might be easier to diagnose. Listening to your posted clip I hear white noise at the beginning...but that sounds like an effect. 'Feedback' is usually caused by a level set too high somewhere in the recording chain.

You are running Windows XP, on a desktop and using a Fast Track usb interface?
Mic and/or instrument inputs?
Monitoring thru headphones or speakers?
If speakers, are they connected to the Fast Track or to your pc?
Does this feedback start immediately on opening Kristal? Without arming any track?

More info on how you are setup would help. But...I would think that this will be a process of elimination exercise. Check your input/output settings in Kristal & Windows...& all of the Fast Track settings too. Kristal doesn't have a input level control (it relies on the input device to control that level).
Try different 'things'. Different mic (maybe use an onboard mic, bypassing the Fast Track just to see if that's a problem). Different usb port or cable. Even a different ac outlet (power problems cause weird things).

Just a couple of thoughts. Should be something simple.

Today I recorded something to show you the problem. It calls "feedback problem".

Yes that's the sound for the sound of the rain.

Running=recording??? If it means recording, so i answer Fast Track!

Mic and/or instrument inputs?
I made two vids to explain you better.
Sorry for the quality of the vid and my comments maybe not in good english.

Monitoring thru headphones or speakers?
Headphones fot monitoring. But Fast track is also set up with two RCA for speakers when i want to listen some music.

If speakers, are they connected to the Fast Track or to your pc?
Fast track (and headphones too).

Yes, immediately, when I open Kristal.

Where is it. I didn't find it.

all of the Fast Track settings too.
I tried to find it with the fuction "search" of my computer but i didn't find something.:(

Thanks a lot again and have a nice evening.:)

Hi Vincent, that post from LoucyztFen3v was a spam post and I have now removed it.
I'm kind of the janitor here. I sweep up the mess....

I don't know anything about the Fast Track so I will leave that to the experts. Good Luck...

Hi Vincentb,

Outstanding info. Great job on the vids & sound clip. I do not profess to be any sort of 'expert'...just trying to help as I can. Don't have an M-Audio interface either. But I'll offer up a suggestion or two.

Things I would try:
In Kristal>Engine>Preferences>Devices, since you are using the Fast Track ASIO, I would try unchecking all of the currently unused MME stuff.
In Kristal, the audio output at the lower left side of the Mixer panel is what selects your driver set for input/output devices. Should be set to your Fast Track.
In Windows, right clicking on the speaker icon at the lower right on the system tray will allow you to select record/playback properties (or access thru Control Panel, Sound..). Fast Track should be default & probably should no have 'listen to this device' checked (under Recording>Properties>Listen).

Hardware isolation...I would start by disconnecting the XLR cable from Fast Track to the mixer & monitoring to see if the interference goes away. If it does, I'd then add one piece of equipment at a time until it reappears. It could be a piece of equipment that has too much gain set, or a cable or a ground issue. Or a flourescent light or a motor or...>???

I've experienced some wierdness when arming a track to record in Kristal if the input setup is too 'hot', but I've never had Kristal start hunning just by opening it. Interesting.

Hi Gcdownie,

I tried everything you told me in your last post and I think there is no solution.

That's a vid to explain you in détails.

Vincentb,

1st off, another great explanatory vid. You cover your problem & corrective actions beautifully. I wish that I could do as well.
Sorry you still have the problem, but isolating it to the Fast Track/XLR connection is a huge step. Again, I'd try disconnecting & reconnecting each of the inputs to your mixer one-at-a-time to see if the problem goes away. That would isolate it to a particular piece of hardware or at least a portion of the signal chain.
Knowing that this problem happened when you changed your signal chain configuration and your location tells a bit too. Sometimes a piece of equiopment is just noisey. Sometimes a ground loop exists that causes frequency interference. Sometimes it's as simple as a sensitive cable running close to an ac power cord. Or multiple devices that do not share the same power circuit (plugged into different ac outlets). And again...it's just a matter of finding the offending device & then determining what about it is causing the problem.
To prove that it isn't Kristal that is at fault, you could download another freeware recording app like
Audacity and see if the problem follows or disappears. You have to set up Audacity but it's a good external editor to use with Kristal and this is an easy tie-breaker sort of check to help isolate troubles. Just a thought.

You are a very thorough, patient, conscientious & polite human being, Mr. Vincentb. My compliments & my hopes that you get this issue resolved. Though somewhat slow these days, someone is always around that is willing & able to help.
Regards,
g

Hello Jcdownie.

First, I do not deserve much praise. You're really nice.

I'll try disconnecting each element. I tried to plug my drum machine live with the XLR cable without going through the mixer and feedback, so I think the problem really comes xlr cable. I will ever test with another XLR cable. Maybe it is defective.

A big thank you for everything you did for me. It was a pleasure chatting with you. I wish you the best for you and tell you soon.

Bye.

Vincentb,

XLR cables can be problematic at times depending on how they are wired. Either 'balanced' or 'unbalanced' makes a difference.
A couple of links t hat might be too much info:
XLR Pinouts
Balanced&Unbalanced

Hope that it's just a bad cable. ;)

Kinda late to the discussion, and a little disappointed the videos were removed... make it harder to follow along and share in the solution.
