Gates, Limiters and Compression.....

Hope I don't sound too much like a rookie here, but what do people feel is the very best way to keep lead vocals or any other troublesome tracks at a consistent decibel/volume level?

What way can we use a gate and limiter or compresser to make sure volume doesn't drop below a certain level or raise above a certain level?

I am using both Kristal and Reaper as my mixers, and I have the use of several plugins such as iZotope Ozone 4, the full Classic Series from Kjaerhus Audio, Glasverb, GGATE, the full JS(with Reaper with several limters) series, ReaComp and ReaGate(both also in Reaper).

What I'd like are simplified explanations of how to get the best ouf of Gates, Limiters and Compression with a view to keeping volume of vocals(mainly) at a particular level and never falling below or peaking above those levels.
Because at times I find myself cutting vocal tracks up and pasting onto a separate track to either lower or raise the volume of the troublesome bit. There MUST be an easier way!

Anyone wanna help? :-)

Thanks.

Madder,

I use a Waves SSL Channel mono which has a parametric eq, compressor, limiter, gate. Not sure where I got it. Joe Guilder at Home Studio Corner.com had a very good video about this over there= http://www.homestudiocorner.com/archives/

Here is the video and article:
http://www.homestudiocorner.com/4-ways-to-deal-with-noise-in...
and
http://www.homestudiocorner.com/using-an-expander-on-vocals-...

Hope that helps.

I've been experimenting with GGATE and Classic Compressor using some of the ideas that Joe suggested in his articles there. I must say it's been most helpful. It really can help to balance a vocal track. I am still finding it difficult however, to eliminate air noises picked up by my very sensitive USB Condenser Mic!The Air noise is nearly as big as the vocal tracks and so it can't really be eliminated from the track when vocals are there. The gate helps to get rid of it whenever the vocals aren't in, but as soon as they come back in the air noise is there with the vocals as the decibel level rises.

Still not sure where limiters might come in here either. But from that 1 reply, I have learnt something and I'm grateful

Hi Madder, don't know if this will help but when I record vocals I set up a home made pop filter and sing a fair way off the mic, say 6" - 8" and use quite a high level on the pre-amp to get a good signal.

See goofy picture

I'll give that a go too, thanks Combobob. I think some of the air noise is likely to be computer fan and stuff like that. The pop screen is a good idea, but I reckon the mic will still pick stuff up!

Madder,

In addition to what Combobob says try pointing your mike away from sounds like AC, outside sounds, etc. And the last link that I put on my earlier post has Joe talking about using the gate/limiter to do what it sounds like you want. Hope all this is helping.

Madder,

Graham at the recording revolution (http://therecordingrevolution.com/) has two articles that you might want to look at. One is called "Back up for better vocals" It is at http://therecordingrevolution.com/2012/03/02/back-up-from-th...
the other is called "What You Donít Want The Mic To Hear". It is at:

I mostly use the Classic Compressor with the Vocal-preset.
The drawback of heavy use of compressors is that they may increase the background noise.

My advice is to use as little of such as possible.
