KAE CHallenge - SEPTEMBER 2008

Challenge for September 2008

Okay, here we go.

This month I can feel the love, I can feel the groove, I can feel the hip and I wanna hopÖ..

Yes folks, this month gonna test us all. You are required to write a brand spanking new song in the following style:

HIP HOP

I have done a bit of looking around toning and here are a couple of links that might clarify the music.
Description on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music
Genres of Hip Hop from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hip_hop_genres
USA Billboard Hip Hop Charts for a quick snapshot: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?f=Ho...

I reckon there are so many different styles in Hip Hop that each of us should be able to find a niche and get a song over the line.

No specific theme but lets hear some good groovy or riffy or funky or laid back or heavy HIP HOP. Instrumentals entries are accepted if you have problems vocalizing the song. Thatís cool. Song length should be over 3 minutes.

Of course, KRISTAL must be used in some capacity during the recording/mixing process.

Multiple uploads allowed in order to fix things up but not to upload a version of the song with added parts.

SPECIAL RULES
1.----In the case of a collaborative song where two or three persons provide input into the song in so far as adding drum track, vocals or a guitar part then the Challenge Entry MUST be treated as a GROUP entry. In this case, when it is Voting time, the collaborators must place only ONE vote as the GROUP. You will have to decide between yourselves what your voting preference is.
2.----If an individual collaborates with other entrants then this can be your ONLY entry in the Challenge. This would obviously mean that you will invalidate your rights to enter a solo effort.

Use the existing Login and Pass to upload you song as previous and select the Band Name - KAE Challenge Sept 2008. Listen to the songs at

http://www.soundclick.com/kaechallengesept2008

Entries can be uploaded until midnight Sunday 21 September 2008 (USA time). Voting will be in the following week.

I think thatís it. Simple and easy. NOT!!!!

Dino

Musically, what are the basic elements of hip hop?

I guess I'll try to do this just for the sake of it, although I never really liked any hip hop.
Perhaps I can find some respect for it (and understanding of it) by trying to do it.

OH DEAR!!! ..............................................:P:P:P:P:P

Thats a beauty Dino, but some questions, ...is bling mandatory? do we have to have several letters preceeding our names and do we have to be packin heat while recording!!!

I think this one has some great potential, take our angry young selves out for a stroll to get yo voice out there, to the masses, white collars and middle classes, tied down by the ropes of those facists [whikha, whiicka, ...wow, wow] build the hopes of our dreams, stop da infinite screams, ................ooopps!!! thought i was on da mic dere for a sec.

Spiral, maybe RunDMC ??? I dont know too many "hoppers", mate. I got the basic concept of electronica with attitude and a metal edge or classical or what ever, just get angry and badassed and tell the world what your thinin! ;):D

Well done Dino, ....again!! :):)

You people might think my English is bad, but my Finnish is the same! ;) :D
I produce same unintelligible mumbling in Finnish too. And now I have to rap!?! :)

How are we going to keep this from slipping into r-rated territory?
As far as I know, in the hip hop world "MF" is not short for musician-fishin but for something else,
"Ho" has nothing to do with Santa...

I just read a bit on the web about it and yeah...Aerosmith had the riffs with Run DMC for sure. Beastie Boys etc etc . I am not that knowledgeable about Hip Hop but I do know that it comes in heap and heaps of styles. Not all Hip Hop is "Gangsta" or about crime. There is Country Hip Hop, Rap Hip Hop, Swing Hip Hop, Smooth Hip Hop etc etc

"Bling" is at your discretion:D:D

get your old record player out and do some "scratchin". Search the net for some samples. Just build a peice of music. Sing or Rap or dont sing or dont rap and just play.

Hey Spiral - the "challenge" is the challenge. I am up for it.

DJ Wodini..out

PS: Nice start with the lyrics there Levi:)

Haha Love it! rkennett and I actually joked around last month and said that if by a long shot we won we would make the next challenge a rap challenge. I'm ready for this one! Too bad about OG sitting out. I really wanted to hear the OG rap attack!:P (O.G. Original Gangster)

If you need an example of positive hip hop check out De La Sol, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, the Roots, Digable Planets, and many others.

This time I will collaborate with my kids. I promised my 2 youngest that they will be on the next track. They will get a kick out of this one. Maybe my oldest can play bass too. Don't worry D man, I will not allow them to vote, (they are too lazy to go to the trouble of voting anyhow!):P

pj, just do a measure or two of something pretty with your flute, then loop it. you can't get any more hip hop than that. if you have no takers, we can collab. you don't have to do anything other than the 2 measures with your flute if you don't want to.

OK - if BL isn't up to it, I'll happily do a collab! Would be fun to work with someone else for a change - although I have to say I love working with Daniel and SO.

There's female singers in almost every hip hop song I know. Or perhaps my idea of hip hop is skewed.

Pardon my ignorance, but how does one enter the challenge? I'm new here, but I have a suitable track ready.

You enter challenge by writing a song especially for it after the challenge has been announced. Then you ask for a password and upload the song to Soundclick. After that, you'r required to vote in the challenge too.

So, you're not allowed to enter if you did write the song (or even started to write it) before the challenge was set. If that's not the case, you're free and more than welcome to enter.

In that case, the first two we entered broke the rules, 'cos the songs were already written and fitted the theme! Sorry - hadn't really taken that bit on board...

Well, that has been the general guideline, to give everyone equal amount of time to come up with a song.
I'm sure you're no the first one to use at lest some pieces of old ideas in a KAEC song.

Nawww... hip-hop is pretty useless musically IMO and would not be much of a challenge given it's simple-ness and droning drums... and anyway ... mine would end up being a parody/satire and probably offend people. Not entering this one either... ehhhh...

===================

From the wikipedia link :

"Hip hop music is a music genre typically consisting of a rhythmic style of speaking called rap over backing beats."

"Hip hop arose in New York City when DJs began isolating the percussion break from funk or disco songs for audiences to dance to."

"Typical instruments
Turntable, vocals, drum machine, sampler, synthesizer, beatboxing"

beatboxing... really? i haven't heard any beatboxing on an actual recording since the mid-to-late 80s. I did hear some beatboxing by Matisyahu, who opened for 311 last summer.

anyway, my original reason for quoting that is hip-hop has evolved quite a bit. there really isn't a limitation on the instruments and you don't have to rap. as spiral said, there are female singers, but males sing as well.

Bgaam, just do any kind of song you want that you would normally like to play, and then add at least one verse with a rap vocal or add a rap in the hook, chorus, etc. I think this challenge can be viewed as one of the more openly interpreted rules wise as any challenge I've seen in a while. No mention of lyrical content rules, it can even be instrumental, no time limit, etc etc.

OG Original Gangster was a song by the legendary Ice T. (the first mainstream gangsta rapper, and now and actor and TV star)

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x107/Krzysieek/Ice-T-OGOr...

peep the video yo!
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=JRTvDikClgw

btw, I'm not much of a fan of most gangsta rap, but I had Ice T cassettes back in the 80's and was a big fan way before he started acting. He also fronted a metal band called body count and got a lot of attention for a song called "Cop Killer". People were outraged and then the whole Rodney King thing happened and Ice T said that is the type of stuff he used to see in LA all the time and why he wrote the song. (All I can say is it's just a song. Nobody threw a fit when Bob Marley sang "I Shot the Sherriff")
