KAE Challenge - JULY 2008 -

Well folks here we are again, and after much inner turmoil and consultation, i think i have it. Your right Dino, much harder to set the rules than participate. ;)

So, without further adoo!! here it is.

KAE Challenge - JULY 2008

Nothing to complicated this month, The theme for this month is "Lost and Found" and must be referenced in the lyrics in some form.

Im sorry folks, no instrumentals, this month [well what did you expect? IMO, I havent heard anyone here that cant hold their own on the mic, seriously] ...nothing personal, Id just like a vocal on it [it will be good for the soul]. Also, a spoken word, narrative style, chant's, voodoo rituals etc, would be fine. Just Vocalize it!

And finally, just because i love a good waltz, the song MUST be in 3/4 time and under 4:20 in length, but not nessarily a waltz, ...push the envelope if you dare, Be bold or tradtional, its your call.

As for Kristal AE use and percentage, Just make sure its the "Dominant male", so to speak!! Its capable of almost anything, anyway!!!

The closing date will be the 3rd of August, 2008, midnight, Australian Eastern Standard time [GMT +10], just to add that little bit extra challenge.

Collabs are allowed and same ruling on them as last month {i'll C&P them, if thats OK, sorry!!}

SPECIAL RULES
1.----In the case of a collaborative song where two or three persons provide input into the song in so far as adding a drum track, vocals or a guitar part then the Challenge Entry MUST be treated as a GROUP entry. In this case, when it is Voting time, the collaborators must place only ONE vote as the GROUP. You will have to decide between yourselves what your voting preference is.

2.----If an individual collaborates with other entrants then this can be your ONLY entry in the Challenge. This would obviously mean that you will invalidate your rights to enter a solo effort.

3.--- NO Vulgar language. It is a condition of entry, if thats not to your liking, then dont enter. Try a different forum, perhaps. Offending songs will be removed.

Well, thats it, I think the 3/4 should suit a few folk here, and challenge most. Hope you like!!!

SEND YOUR ENTRIES TO:-
A huge thanks to Dino who has kindly set up this months page and it shall reside in the domain of:

I think I will try this one, but if I remember, KAE turns into a monster when you go odd times with it! I'll do my best.

Owww. Lev, I had a feeling you'd come up with something to do with time, so I just spent the last 16 hours composing a grand opus in 9/8 time! Guess I'll have to scrap it now.:(

Congrats on your shiny new possession!

Hey Leeevvii9 that cup looks good with your name above it. Does the ENTIRE song need to be waltz time, or just a recognizable section of the song? (might as well split hairs now instead of later) :)

HMMM!! .....fair question CR, I think in the name of keeping it simple, im gonna say, it must be 71.6298%, 3/4, not a beat more, not a tick less!! :P:P

Just kiddin, mate. I think i'll just say, "..MOSTLY 3/4", I know some folk might fancy a time change or two. I suppose im just after "your interpretation of a 3/4 time song", be it what it may. If 54/72 is your idea of 3/4, then so be it, but i strongly suggest a bit of light reading on the topic of music theory, if this is the case!! :P:P The punters will decide at the polls on the content.

OK thanks, I'm clear on that! 3/4 is my least favorite time signature but I have a few ideas I might try. This time I am the one that is looking at this challenge as being outside of my normal comfort zone. (the Reggae thing wasn't that big of a deal for me) I guess I owe you thanks for making this challenge a tough one for me.;)

I can think of "Take it to the limits" by Eagles as a great contempory

Maybe even 6/8 for my entry. Hmmm lets see now .....

Nice one Levi:)

3/4, aah, my favourite.

I don't know how many of you know Devin Townsend, but he's got some heavy and beautiful music in 3/4.

--Just a tecnicality-- 3/4 is quite different to 6/8, isnt it, .....yeh it counts the same, but a totally different feel. Id like to hear your views on that one.

And, im flexable. [plus, I dont want to be too, rectal, about it either!.]

Curious, Butterfly Ball by Dio, ....3/4 or 6/8 ???? i must grab a listen, .....Im learning here, too.

"So much for keeping it simple Levi!!!!"

This sounds good leevii.
My feelings about 3/4 and 6/8 are that although they have the same amount of 8th notes in the bar, 6/8 has a pulse of two (ONE, two, three, ONE, two, three)
Whereas 3/4 has a feel of three beats in the bar, emphasis on 1 and 3 (ONE and two and THREE and).
Will see what I come up with.
Lost and Found huh?
Getting some Combo-Pop-psychedelic-funk-fusion-soul-folk ideas already:D:D:D

Ok, I got a question for you. I've heard some pretty crazy songs by the likes of bands like Tool that use multiple time signatures at the same time. Sound crazy? Well imaging a pair of acoustic guitars: one playing a simple lick over and over in 3/4 and the other playing a melody over the top in 4/4. sounds odd at first but it will match up every 4 bars and really sounds good. A fellow I played with back when I was in my teens wrote a song to this effect and it was fascinating. The hard part is figuring out how to bob your head to it. :) My question is does it count as 3/4 or 4/4 and can we use it in the challenge. I know you said the majority should be 3/4, but the example song I gave was in 3/4 AND 4/4 the entire song, how do you count that?

Oh man. I'll try but I only just got the hang of 4/4! ONE and two and THREE and turn.
