KAE Challenge - JUNE 2008

Challenge for June 2008

Okay, here we go.

This month you will be required to write a brand spanking new song in the following style:

REGGAE

Now this can be Funky Reggae, Country Reggae, Heavy Metal Reggae, Punk Reggae, Traditional Reggae etcetera.

The main aim of the song would be to hit the listener in the ear and get them to say “oh that’s a reggae song”. So….the song must emit a certain “reggae” vibe in say the Chorus or a Verse or maybe even the whole song.

The song should be no more than 4:00 minutes in duration and should contain the word “JUNE” somewhere in the lyrics.

Of course, KRISTAL must be used in some capacity during the recording/mixing process.

Multiple uploads can be made to the Soundclick page but only to fix minor problems such as fade outs/ins or other sound artifacts etcetera that occur as a result of the upload process. You should not re-upload a version of the song with added parts.

SPECIAL RULES
1.----In the case of a collaborative song where two or three persons provide input into the song in so far as adding a drum track, vocals or a guitar part then the Challenge Entry MUST be treated as a GROUP entry. In this case, when it is Voting time, the collaborators must place only ONE vote as the GROUP. You will have to decide between yourselves what your voting preference is.

2.----If an individual collaborates with other entrants then this can be your ONLY entry in the Challenge. This would obviously mean that you will invalidate your rights to enter a solo effort.

The page for the uploads and to listen to the songs is

http://www.soundclick.com/kaechallengejune2008

Entries can be uploaded until midnight Sunday 6 July 2008 (USA time). Voting will be in the following week.

I think that’s it. Simple and easy and I await in anticipation the flack regarding Special Rules.

Dino

Any good sites where I could learn the basics of reggae.
It's not exactly our (Finns) traditional music! :D

Why would there be any of that?

So far so good.

Hey Spiral - maybe take in some UB40, Bob Marley, Police etc. So much out there.

Its not my style but having a go will be fun. The new genre - Heavy Metal Finn Reggae. Got a certain ring to it "Maaan".;)

No, I will fight the temptation to add heavy guitars to it!

But probably lose the fight.

No, stay strong Spiral!

But...

No buts...

Still...

ITs [reggae] about accents & dropping beats, in its purest form, isnt it Dino?

Have you tried "Metalheads anonymous" Spiral? :P:D:cool:

I suppose the pure Reggae does have lots of space on the drums. Mainly Kick and Snare I think. Lots of snare on the 4th beat of the bar??. I am yet to find out myself.

OMFG I cant effin believe it Ive actually got this half-baked(pun intended) idea of a reggae song that I've been bouncin' around for about a week, what timing! Or is there a rule somewhere sayin I'm gonna hafta think up a NEW idea cuz that one's a pre-existing idea?:o

And I'd REALLY like to hear a heavy guitar based reggae beat, mon.
Too bad I only party like a rock star, not play like one.
Spiral, listen to the lil' devil on your other shoulder and SHRED DAT AXE!!

Four minutes? Sure you dont wanna add twenty seconds to that, Dino? 4:20 seems so much more, uh, 420ish, n stuff.

Not that I condone breaking any laws. Kids, stay in school.

Wow, I can see that KAE trophy avatar in my lil' corner now... LOL actually I'm gonna shoot for next-to-last place. May not be a coveted position, but at least I'm aimin' UP.

But then again dead last does have its charm..

Don't go there... :D
Seriously, do not go there.
I guess you have not been here long enough to know why, but trust me. :D

Partly kidding, partly not.:)

No, just kidding. Kinda. I'm confused myself.

Could have thrown a few "Chicks" in with the "chinks" a least:).

Karmanistic -
Song has to be brand new - created after the rules were set. Also, there is a lyric/vocal line required somewhere in the song. The word "June".

You are more than welcome to join in. More the merrier.

The Challenge just gives us something else to think about outside of what we normally try to create.

The wife and I were in Jamaica two years ago for 5 days and this is what I remember

The term irie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irie

The godfather of what I call traditional reggae mon!
http://www.myspace.com/bobmarley
I think Three Little Birds has got to be my fav.

And a hybrid hip-hop reggae was pretty popular while we were there. I'm not sure what classifies this as reggae other than lyrics/accent.
http://www.myspace.com/seanpaul
I don't know how many times I heard that song 'Temperature"

I heard UB40 was staying at our hotel, but never saw them. This guy was about 10 feet away from me.
http://www.naani.com/contents/media/597c08020.jpg
He's in the band Steel Pulse.
http://www.myspace.com/theofficialsteelpulse

I didn't know who he was at the time, but I remember a lot of people knew who he was and were talking to him. An all-weekend Reggae music festival, Summerjam 2006, was taking place a couple of miles from our hotel on the weekend we were leaving. If we would have timed it right, we would have went for a day.

edit
-----
http://www.reggaesunsplashja.com/
Reggae Sun Splash, not Summerjam
----

I got a lot stories from my trip that I'll have to draw from for this one. We had to haggle for about everything, there was a one-legged street musician with dreds to his ankles, horrible roads, lot's of rum, etc, etc. Some stories good, some bad mon.
